Welcome to Chrysalis Photography
Welcome to Chrysalis Photography — fine art black-and-white photography inspired by scale, solitude, light, and the emotional experience of place.
The Story
The name Chrysalis was inspired by the transformation of a butterfly emerging from its pupa — a difficult and necessary struggle that ultimately gives it the strength to fly. That idea of transformation, resilience, and growth became deeply personal to JD and the foundation of his artistic journey.

JD's relationship with photography began with his father's vintage film camera, where an early fascination with capturing memories and emotions slowly evolved into a lifelong pursuit. Coming from an engineering background, he was initially drawn to the precision and intricacy of the camera itself, but over time photography became something far deeper — a way of experiencing life with intention.
A cancer survivor, JD's perspective on life changed profoundly through that journey. It taught him to slow down, live in the present, and fully immerse himself in the moments and spaces around him. Photography became more than an art form; it became a reflection of transformation itself — a way to reconnect with wonder, vulnerability, stillness, and the vastness of the world.
Today, his images are a byproduct of that journey to experience life at its fullest.
In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and digital manipulation, JD's approach remains steadfastly grounded in what is real, natural, and pure. He believes photography should be a direct conversation between the photographer, the moment, and the viewer — untouched by filters, algorithms, or artificial enhancement. Every image is a genuine capture of light, emotion, and place, created with intention and integrity. This commitment to authenticity is what sets his work apart and makes each photograph a true reflection of lived experience.
Influenced by mountains, oceans, architecture, silence, shadow, and expansive natural spaces, JD creates photographs that evoke wonder, solitude, freedom, and the feeling of being small within something far greater than ourselves.

Working primarily in black and white, he removes the distraction of colour to focus on emotion, light, texture, contrast, and atmosphere. Rather than simply documenting reality, each image becomes an interpretation of a lived experience — moments felt deeply before they were ever captured.
The Prints
Each artwork is carefully curated and produced to create a powerful visual presence within a space. Designed for large living areas, modern interiors, executive boardrooms, hotel lobbies, and architectural environments, these images are intended to be experienced — not simply viewed.
The scale of the work is intentional. JD believes photography needs space to breathe, allowing the viewer to step back, pause, and emotionally enter the frame.
